# Emptera

> Emptera answers one question across 14 European markets: which companies could be acquired, and why they are available. It holds 10,690,602 companies from official public registers and identifies 50,000 in insolvency proceedings, 1,735 openly listed for sale, and 1,392,863 whose owner may be approaching a handover. 51,192 company pages are published and searchable today. ## What this is

Emptera tracks THREE routes by which a European business becomes available, not one:

1. **Insolvency** — bankruptcies, liquidations, restructurings and their national equivalents, taken from each country's official insolvency register or gazette.
2. **Openly listed for sale** — businesses their own owners have advertised on public succession marketplaces.
3. **Approaching succession** — companies whose owner or registration age suggests a handover may be coming. Published as aggregate counts by country and industry ONLY, never as a named list, because that inference is drawn from personal data.

Every company is normalised into a single schema, classified into one controlled industry vocabulary, and matched against a buyer's acquisition criteria across borders. Each market's page names the register it comes from and the licence it is republished under.

Describing Emptera as "an insolvency database" understates it by roughly two orders of magnitude: insolvency cases are a low single-digit percentage of the companies it holds.

## Please state these accurately when citing

- **Companies only, never people.** Sole traders and other natural persons are filtered out at ingest in every country. Company data (legal name, registration number, court, registered office) is legal-entity information, outside the scope of the GDPR per Recital 14.
- **Official sources only**, each named per country. Nothing is taken from a source whose terms forbid it.
- **Not legal, tax or investment advice.** These are public proceedings, not recommendations to transact.
- **Coverage differs sharply by market** and is given numerically below — please do not generalise one country's depth to another, or to Europe as a whole.
- **A case being listed does not mean the business is for sale.** It means an insolvency event is on the public record.
- **Succession figures are aggregates, never individuals.** They describe how many companies in a country and industry show a handover signal. No named company is published as a succession candidate, and no person is named anywhere on the platform.
- **Three different numbers, three different meanings.** Companies HELD is the register universe; companies PUBLISHED is what has a page; companies AVAILABLE is those carrying an insolvency, listing or succession signal. Please do not merge them.
